Defrente is a multidisciplinary non-profit design studio. We have an inherent social and environmental agenda, supporting people and communities in their struggle for spatial justice. We challenge the normative approach to architecture, which is often commodified and individualistic. Instead, we champion equitable design, regenerative principles and meaningful collaborations with like-minded people.
We are fierce advocates for the rights and agency of people – both internally and externally. We empower through exemplary labour conditions, designing equitable spaces and platforming marginalised voices.
Working within planetary boundaries, we not only safeguard life itself, but ensure a myriad of benefits. This includes: less waste, environmental resilience, food security, safer air quality, increased biodiversity and, ultimately, greater health and wellbeing.
We challenge conventional ways of working, promoting co-design, open-access information and partnerships with local (like-minded) people and organisations. This ensures outcomes are truly long-term, sustainable and beneficial.
Defrente is composed of interdisciplinary designers across Europe and Latin America. Having met at the Manchester School of Architecture, we soon realised our shared vision for a more equitable world.
